I had mixed feelings about leaving my family, friends, and my second homeland, Australia, to move to a foreign country, but I was following my heart’s calling. My world had opened when I traveled in Europe in 1996 and met the man of my dreams. So I traded the warm, sunny weather and wonderful friends and family to be with the one I live in Oregon.
Five months later, while getting comfortable with my new surroundings (despite being cold and wet outside), I found myself missing my home and family. Just then, the phone rang. I was so excited to hear my father’s voice, but my heart sank when I heard the news: My 51-year-old mother had been diagnosed with end-stage lung cancer and given just months to live.
I was shaken by the news and felt helpless being so far away. I wanted my mother to still live her dream of visiting the United States, see the world like I did, to be at our wedding, and to hold my baby. This was a nightmare that I couldn’t wake up from.
I had never prayed so hard before that time. On my knees, I begged and pleaded to Quan Am, the compassion deity, bargaining for more time for my mother. Suddenly, it became clear what I needed to do. I gathered myself together, packed up my 25-pound wedding gown, and flew to Australia to spend time with my mother and have the wedding there so she could attend.
I spent the last year of my mother’s life learning more about her and her childhood than I had over the 28 years growing up with her. For that, I am forever grateful. Through this experience, I learned so much – about my mother and also about life itself. I learned to appreciate my health. I learned that nothing is permanent and time does not wait for anyone. I learned to love now, to live now, and to cherish each precious moment.
